Darwin Ausecha is a limited release, as we were only able to secure a single 150 lb bag of this special microlot. It will sell quickly! This coffee is only available in 12 oz bags, in order to help reserve this special coffee for as many people as possible.
The floral, brown sweetness we uncovered in Darwin's microlot is a delicate, wonderful note found in some of our favorite coffees. Floral qualities tend to be somewhat easily squandered by imprecise roasting, however, we think we found the perfect balance-- a light-medium roast --to highlight Darwin Ausecha's Lilac and Bergamot qualities. Think Earl Grey tea. Its plum fruitiness flirts with a berry quality, but doesn't quite take this coffee to that extreme. All in all, it's a very approachable coffee for someone curious of complex flavors, but who prefers mellow acidity and traditional, grounded coffee notes like brown sugar, vanilla, or chocolate.

Cooperative: COSURCA After the recent, successful launch of our Isney Solano Pink Bourbon Colombia microlot, we are excited to offer yet another Cauca, Colombia coffee that showcases the fascinating breadth of sensory possibilities among coffees of the same region. As with Isney Solano, Cosurca is the co-op that supplied us with this wonderful washed coffee. Unlike Isney Solano, however, the fruit notes we've highlighted in Darwin Ausecha's coffee are less tropical and bright, though no less flavorful. The sweetness here is bolstered by rounder, richer notes. Try this one alongside our Apex Fondo Paez to experience the fascinating range of what a Colombian coffee can be. The cherries were shade cultivated under Guamo, avocado, and musasea trees, hand-picked from only ripe fruit, pulped the same day, fermented for 14 to 18 hours, washed with clean water, and dried in parabolic racks for 8 to 10 days. |
COSURCA Cooperative : Get to know the producers
Since their inception, COSURCA has followed seven core values: Solidarity, Cooperation, Responsibility, Honesty, Hard work, Social Engagement, and Respect for Individuals and Nature.
COSURCA is a secondary-level cooperative currently comprised of eleven producer asociations, one cooperative and three territorial entities or municipalities from the Southern Colombian Macizo mountains in the center and south of the region of Cauca.
The organization was constituted on March 12, 1993 with the objective of furthering the economic development of a region that was largely cut off from the rest of the country due to civil war and political violence. With support from the Alternative Development program of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, and through the institutional cooperation of the Integrated Rural Development Program of the Colombian Government, the regional Cauca Government and municipalities in the area, the project sought to offer alternatives to illicit coca production to small farmers in the area in the regions of Southern Cauca and Northern Nariño by supporting investment projects in campesino communities and in their production. Under the COSURCA umbrella, small farmer organizations now received the support to develop markets for their products, primarily coffee, but also receive financing through a loan and savings program, as well as technical assistance in production.
Currently COSURCA is providing accompaniment and support in the technical, organizational, commercial, political and judicial development of 1500 small farmer families, with an emphasis on organic and fair trade coffee production, food security and self-sufficiency for communities through the production of staple crops, as well as the production and commercialization of tropical fuits for pulp and juices. COSURCA exports fair trade coffee to small and medium wholesale coffee roasters, but also manages its own line of wholesale roasted coffee for the domestic market. As a fundamental tenet of its philosophy of economic development, COSURCA strives to be as inclusive as possible by engaging ethnic minority groups and women in the different projects it implements in its communities.
